Legends from San Juan

The Bacá

In our culture, a well-known character is the Bacá. According to the beliefs of whom admit their existence, is a demanding being that require enormous sacrifices for his owner, including the delivery to people in the family, therefore, disease or death of a family member whom attributes the possession of the Bacá always considered as a work of this being.

Bacá, people bring it to life in either a black cat, a bull, a cow, or other animal, which cares any land, livestock, home or business of a person seeking prosperity. The stories tell the Bacá gives prosperity to the person, but if this fails to accord with it ends up committing suicide or dying mysteriously.

The Indians of the Waters

The Indians of the Waters, is the mythical name given to fabulous being that live in underwater caves of rivers and lakes within the caverns of the mountains. This myth according to some historians, it is more than distorted concept of our aborigines. Others believe that comes from the Indian legend of an idol called Opiyelguobiran who escaped and went to a pond and never seen again, and has been transformed as a Taíno retention in the oral traditions.

They confirm that Indians are beautiful, especially women, and they have tan skin, large black eyes, a perfectly formed body and a very long black hair.

Other legends come from San Juan de la Maguana are The Witches, The Liborio’s Water, etc.
