The music of the Dominican Republic is known primary for merengue, though bachata and other forms are also popular.

Merengue

Merengue is a musical genre native to the Dominican Republic. Swift beats from guira, and drum such as the tambora. The accordion is also commun, and is mostly heard in merengue tipico. Rafael Leonida Trujillo, who seizethe presidency of the Dominican Republic in 1930, help merengue to become a national symbol of the islan up until his assessination in 1961. Being that he was of humble origins, he had been barred from elite social clubs.

Bachata

Bachata is a style of music that inhabitans of shantytowns call their own to own. Though this may seen like almoust a negative connotation, one should remember that bachata has been widely a ccepted through many thouhnot aal.
